Photography has been a lifelong passion for John, who has captured millions of images starting with his first camera, a Kodak Disc 4000, in 1982. It was in high school at Grosse Pointe South when John decided to parlay his love of the art into a career. John chose Ohio University, the leading photojournalism school in the nation, to hone his craft. After five years of study and nearly two years of internships, John graduated from the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in Photojournalism.
John worked as a staff photographer at newspapers throughout the Midwest in the following years before turning freelance in 2001. Since then, he has completed numerous assignments for The New York Times, Associated Press, Sports Illustrated, Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, Chicago Tribune and USA Today.
It was also in 2001 when John decided to put his documentary photography skills to use in the wedding business. His years of shooting unscripted news, sports and feature images gave him the experience necessary to capture couples’ happiest and most important moments without interference.
